Dynamics GP – Account Maintenance
In Dynamics GP, general ledger accounts are a combination of the “natural account” with additional segments that represent different reporting units. For instance, a company may have a segment for the Department. They may also have a segment for their Lines of Business. For example, a Dynamics GP account may look something like this: 200-5100-00. This account may be broken down into its parts as follows:
Segment 1 (“200”): Department
Segment 2 (“5100”): Natural Account
Segment 3 (“00”): Sub Account
Chart of Accounts - Dynamics Business Central
In Business Central, the Chart of Account list only includes the Natural Account. The other reporting units are called Dimensions. Dimensions are used just as Segments are in Dynamics GP. They are added to transactions just as the Dynamics GP account string is entered as a part of a distribution. The difference, however, is that Dimensions can be used in a much more flexible way. Dimension codes can be required or not required, can be defaulted from master records, and incorporate rules may be applied during posting.
Dimensions in Business Central
In the example above , the Dimensions for the company are "CUSTOMERGROUP" and "DEPARTMENT". Within each of these dimensions, there are Dimension Value Codes. Those Dimension Value codes are the equivalent of a Segment value in Dynamics GP.
Dimensions used in a Transaction
When you use a dimension in a transaction, you will see that they are their own fields. In GP, the G/L Account contains the dimensions embedded in the account number string. In BC, the dimensions are in their own field. In the example below, 61600 is the natural account and "ADM" and "LARGE" are the two dimension codes. If this was a GP account, the G/L Account would look something like this: "61600-ADM-LARGE"
